The questions people would rather not ask on the phone

Answered here so that not knowing is not a reason to put it off. If your question is not here, ask it when you call — it is not a bother.

Local anaesthetic is used for every filling and extraction, and she will stop if you raise your hand. Numbness lasts an hour or two afterwards. She will not tell you it is painless — she will tell you exactly what she is about to do.
No figures are published, because none of them would be true for your mouth. She examines first, with a digital X-ray where it helps, then explains the options and what each one would cost. Nothing begins until you have agreed to one — you will not find out the cost in the chair. More about cost.
A root canal visit is about an hour. A check-up is usually about fifteen minutes, a filling thirty to forty-five, and a scaling thirty to forty. A serial number is given when you call, so you are not waiting through a whole session.
The clinic is open every day, 10:00–14:00 and 16:00–22:00. Call 01850-365326 first and you are given a serial number for that session, which is why ringing ahead is better than turning up — it saves you waiting through a whole session.
Please call 01850-365326 and ask. Whether a child can be seen, and from what age, depends on the child and on what is bothering them — that is a quicker conversation on the phone than a rule written on a page.
Say so at the start of the appointment. It changes how the appointment is run, not whether you are welcome: she will explain what she is about to do before she does it, and she will stop if you raise your hand. If it helps, call first and describe what you are worried about before you book.
The clinic is on the second floor of Shikder Plaza. If stairs would be difficult for them, call 01850-365326 before you travel and ask what the access is like. Someone can wait with them in the room.
Ask when you call, or when you arrive, and you will be told which methods the clinic takes before any treatment begins.
Any previous X-rays, a list of the medicines you take, and any prescription from a doctor about your teeth.
Tell her before anything starts and the treatment is planned around it. This page cannot advise on your own case; the conversation in the room can.

Before your visit

  • Bring any old X-rays and a list of the medicines you take.
  • Arrive a few minutes early.
  • Tell her about medical conditions, pregnancy, or blood thinners before anything starts.
  • Children come with a parent or guardian.

Still unsure?

Ask on the phone before you book. Describing the problem costs nothing and takes two minutes.

Aftercare

General information, not a diagnosis, and not a replacement for what you were told in the chair.

After an extraction

  • Bite on the gauze for the time she tells you.
  • No rinsing, no hot drinks and no smoking for the rest of the day.
  • Some bleeding and swelling on the first day is expected.
  • Call back if bleeding does not stop or pain increases after day three.

After a filling

  • Wait until the numbness has gone before eating, so you do not bite your cheek.
  • Sensitivity to cold for a few days is common.
  • Call back if the tooth feels high when you bite.

After scaling

  • Gums may be tender and may bleed a little for a day.
  • Brush gently but do not stop brushing.
  • Sensitivity usually settles within a week.
